Into the Heart of the Ore Mountains: Sauersack, Chaloupky & the Flavours of the Forest

When the mist clears, a forgotten world appears – the ghostly remains of the Sauersack tin mine, hidden deep in the forest. During World War II, the Nazis built a large-scale industrial complex and labor camp here. Beneath the moss and concrete, a 12-kilometre network of underground tunnels still stretches in silence. It’s a place with scars – but also with an eerie peace. For lovers of mystery, history and the quiet power of nature, it’s a must-see.

The story of Vojtěch Nedvěd, the last postwar mine supervisor who in 1945 tried to bring the site back to life, reminds us that even in forgotten places, human stories remain.

On the way to the mine, we pass through the ruins of the vanished village of Chaloupky, once home to over 500 people. Only the stone foundations and old apple trees remain, along with the tale of forester Franz, who stayed behind after the war – living alone in harmony with the forest.

We stop for a snack in the wild, and take a short walk through the Rolava peat bog reserve – wooden walkways winding through wetlands and swamp pines straight out of a fairy tale.

The trip ends in Poštovna Rolava, a cosy mountain restaurant set in a former post office. We’ll warm up with soup, blueberry dumplings or a beer from a local brewery.

An adventure full of mystery, landscape and forgotten stories – and I’ll be your storyteller along the way.
