Did you know that the American dollar has its roots in a small mining town in the Czech Republic? Right here, in Jáchymov at the foot of the Ore Mountains, begins a story that helped shape the world.
A Legacy Hidden in the Mountains
In the early 16th century, the noble Šlik family discovered rich silver deposits and established the Royal Mint in Jáchymov in 1516. By 1520, they were minting high-quality silver coins known as Joachimsthalers, named after the town’s original German name – Joachimsthal.
The name gradually shortened to thaler, became tolar in Czech, and transformed into daler in Dutch. When the United States chose a name for its new currency in 1792, it adopted this well-traveled term – and thus, the dollar was born.
A Coin That Changed History
Joachimsthalers were more than just money. They were a symbol of trust and quality. Each coin contained nearly pure silver (up to 29 g), and their weight and purity set a standard across Europe. They quickly spread across the continent and became widely accepted.
A Story That Captivated American Television
In 2023, a U.S. television crew came to Jáchymov to film a documentary about the origins of the dollar. The anniversary of the first minted coins and the town’s rich history inspired a program for international audiences. Here’s a short preview.
